Why this might happen
- Touchpad disabled via Fn key, settings, or BIOS.
- Driver corruption or outdated drivers preventing proper operation.
- Windows settings misconfiguration — touchpad disabled in OS preferences.
- External mouse override — some settings disable the touchpad when an external mouse is connected.
- Firmware/BIOS glitches that disable the embedded controller.
- Hardware fault — loose ribbon cable, liquid damage, or defective touchpad.
Troubleshooting steps
1. Basic checks
- Verify Fn + F1 (or Fn + relevant key) hasn’t disabled the touchpad. Look for a touchpad icon on your keyboard.
- Disconnect any external mouse/USB receiver and see if the touchpad reactivates.
2. Windows settings
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
- Ensure the toggle for Touchpad is On.
- If already on, toggle Off → On again.
3. Device Manager driver check
- Press Win+X > Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices → locate HID-compliant touchpad or Precision Touchpad.
- Right-click → Update driver → Search automatically.
4. Reinstall driver
- In Device Manager, right-click the touchpad entry → Uninstall device.
- Check Delete the driver software for this device (if available).
- Reboot — Windows should reinstall the driver.
- Alternatively, run VAIO Update to reinstall OEM-specific touchpad drivers.
5. Windows Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter if available.
6. BIOS/UEFI check
- Restart and press F2 (or Del) to enter BIOS.
- Confirm Internal Pointing Device or Touchpad is Enabled.
- Load defaults if unsure, then Save & Exit.
7. Power reset (EC reset)
- Shut down the laptop.
- Disconnect AC adapter and peripherals.
- Hold Power button for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect AC, then reboot and retest.
8. External device conflict
- If touchpad works in Safe Mode, a third-party driver or utility may be interfering.
- Perform a Clean Boot to isolate the culprit.
9. Safety check
- If touchpad remains completely unresponsive and doesn’t appear in Device Manager, the ribbon cable or hardware itself may be faulty and require service.
Still not fixed.
