Why this might happen
- Sensor not detected — fingerprint hardware disabled in BIOS or missing drivers.
- Dirty or damaged sensor — dust, oil, or scratches interfere with readings.
- Enrollment errors — fingerprint data not properly registered.
- Firmware/driver glitches — outdated biometric or chipset drivers.
- Windows Hello configuration issues — profile corruption or Group Policy restrictions.
- Environmental factors — wet or very dry skin can cause failed scans.
Troubleshooting steps
1. Basic checks
- Ensure your finger is clean and dry.
- Wipe the fingerprint sensor gently with a microfiber cloth.
- Try a different finger if one consistently fails.
2. Re-enroll fingerprints
- Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Under Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) → Remove all saved fingerprints.
- Reboot, then Set up and re-enroll new fingerprints.
3. Check Windows Hello settings
- In Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, ensure Windows Hello Fingerprint is listed.
- If it’s missing, driver or hardware may not be detected.
4. Device Manager check
- Press Win+X > Device Manager.
- Expand Biometric devices → look for entries like Synaptics or Goodix Fingerprint.
- If missing, scan for hardware changes.
- If present, right-click → Update driver → Search automatically.
5. Uninstall/reinstall fingerprint driver
- In Device Manager > Biometric devices, right-click the fingerprint sensor → Uninstall device.
- Check Delete the driver software for this device if available.
- Restart; Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
- Alternatively, run VAIO Update and install the latest biometric drivers.
6. Windows Updates & BIOS
- Run Windows Update and VAIO Update.
- Install all pending security, chipset, and BIOS updates.
- Reboot and test again.
7. BIOS/UEFI settings
- Reboot and press F2 (or Del) to enter BIOS.
- Check that Fingerprint/Windows Hello support is Enabled.
- Load defaults if unsure → Save & Exit.
8. Reset Windows Hello
- In rare cases, the Windows Hello framework may be corrupted.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options → disable Fingerprint & PIN.
- Reboot, then set them up again from scratch.
9. Alternative login
- If fingerprint consistently fails, log in with PIN or Microsoft account password while troubleshooting.
10. Safety check
- If the fingerprint sensor is physically cracked, loose, or shows no activity even after driver/BIOS checks, it may require hardware replacement.
Still not fixed.
