Why this might happen
- BitLocker recovery triggered due to hardware changes (e.g., BIOS update, disk changes, new motherboard).
- Forgotten or misplaced recovery key — user didn’t save/print the original 48-digit key.
- Microsoft account sync issues — recovery key not syncing properly to the cloud.
- Organization policy (work/school accounts) enforcing BitLocker with keys stored in Azure Active Directory.
- Corrupted boot data — Windows detects tampering or corruption in the boot environment.
Troubleshooting steps
1. Check Microsoft account online
- On another device, sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey.
- Use the same Microsoft account linked to your VAIO.
- Look for the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key associated with your device.
2. Check printed or saved copies
- Review any documents or USB drives where the recovery key was saved during initial setup.
- Look for a printout labeled “BitLocker Recovery Key”.
3. Work or school account (Azure AD/Intune)
- If this VAIO is linked to a work/school account, log in to your organization’s portal (or ask IT admin).
- Keys are often stored in Azure Active Directory (AAD) and can be retrieved via the admin console.
4. Check USB drive or local file
- If you chose to save the recovery key to a USB drive or text file, insert that USB into the locked laptop.
- The BitLocker prompt should detect it automatically.
5. BIOS/TPM settings
- Enter BIOS/UEFI (F2 at startup) and confirm:
• TPM (Trusted Platform Module) is enabled.
• Secure Boot is enabled. - Incorrect settings can sometimes trigger BitLocker recovery.
6. Use another administrator account (if available)
- If you have another admin account on the device, log in and check Control Panel > BitLocker Drive Encryption for recovery options.
7. If no key is available
- Unfortunately, BitLocker cannot be bypassed without the recovery key.
- Microsoft designed this for data security — if the key is lost, the only option is a full drive format and Windows reinstall.
Still not fixed?
If you cannot locate the key:
- Retrieve it here (personal Microsoft account): Find my BitLocker recovery key
- For business/organization accounts: contact your IT administrator.
- If the key is permanently lost and you cannot recover it, proceed with a Windows reset (which erases data). Instructions: Recover BitLocker-protected PC
