How to Secure Your VAIO with BitLocker

BitLocker is a built-in Windows security feature that encrypts your hard drive, protecting your files if your VAIO laptop is lost or stolen. This article explains how to enable, configure, and manage BitLocker encryption.

Step 1: Check Requirements

• Windows 10/11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education edition (BitLocker is not available on Home edition).

• A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip or a USB flash drive for storing the encryption key.

• Administrator account access on your VAIO.

Step 2: Turn On BitLocker

1. Click the Start Menu → type Manage BitLocker and open it.

2. In the BitLocker Drive Encryption window, find your system drive (C:).

3. Click Turn on BitLocker.

4. Choose how to unlock your drive at startup:

   • TPM (automatic) – most modern VAIO laptops support this.

   • Password – requires entering a password each boot.

   • USB Key – requires a special USB drive inserted to start Windows.

Step 3: Save Your Recovery Key

1. Windows will generate a recovery key (needed if you forget your password or TPM fails).

2. Save the recovery key to one of the following:

   • Microsoft account (recommended).

   • USB flash drive.

   • File on another drive.

   • Print it out.

3. Keep this key safe — without it, your data cannot be recovered.

Step 4: Choose Encryption Settings

1. Select whether to encrypt:

   • Used disk space only (faster, for new devices).

   • Entire drive (slower, recommended for devices already in use).

2. Choose New encryption mode (best for fixed drives) or Compatible mode (if you plan to move the drive to an older PC).

3. Click Start Encrypting.

4. Encryption will run in the background; you can continue using your VAIO during the process.

Step 5: Managing BitLocker

• To suspend, resume, or turn off BitLocker, return to Manage BitLocker in Control Panel.

• To back up your recovery key, click Back up your recovery key in the same menu.
