VAIO laptops include Function (Fn) keys that provide quick access to features like brightness, volume, and keyboard backlight. This article explains how to use the Fn keys and what to do if they don’t work.
How Fn Keys Work
The Fn key is usually located at the bottom-left corner of your keyboard.
When pressed together with the top-row F1–F12 keys, it activates shortcut features.
Depending on your VAIO model, Fn keys may control:
Brightness (Fn + F5/F6)
Volume (Fn + F2/F3/F4)
Keyboard backlight (Fn + F6/F7 or Fn + F10)
Touchpad on/off (Fn + F1 or similar)
Mute/unmute microphone (Fn + F8)
Sleep/standby mode (Fn + F12)
Switching Fn Key Behavior
Some VAIO models allow you to choose whether the top row keys act as standard function keys (F1–F12) or hotkeys without pressing Fn.
Open VAIO Control Center from the Start Menu.
Go to Keyboard and Mouse or Keyboard Settings.
Look for an option like Function Key Behavior.
Select one of the following:
Use F1–F12 as standard keys (must press Fn for hotkeys).
Use hotkeys by default (press Fn to use F1–F12).
